Claire A. Berman is an essayist, novelist, health communicator, and unapologetically indulgent auntie. Her parents instilled in her an early love of reading, which has continued throughout her life. She particularly loves character-driven stories that fuse storytelling with science and/or challenge our assumptions about each other.* Claire's essays have appeared in Bellevue Literary Review, JMWW, The Sunlight Press, and Little Old Lady Comedy. She is a Virginia Center for the Creative Arts Fellow and is currently working on two novels: The Accidentals and That Summer.
In her day job, Claire has used storytelling and art to communicate about health and science, particularly about pediatric HIV. The best part of her job has been working alongside study participants to ensure that research about HIV happens in partnership with the community.
Claire is an alumna of Grubstreet's Novel Generator Program, is enrolled in Grubstreet's 2025-26 Essay Incubator Program, and holds a Master of Science in Health Communication from Tufts University School of Medicine. She holds Bachelor's degrees in English and German and is a former Fulbright Scholar. She loves running, biking, hiking, and birdwatching in the nature surrounding her home.
*Sadly, her first book (pictured left) contained none of these elements, but hopefully it has only gotten better from there.
