That Summer

At Camp Firefly, a summer camp for children affected by HIV, 15-year-old Chrissy uncovers secrets about her mother Mila’s past—a best friend lost to AIDS when she attended the same camp in 1996, and a history of silence and stigma. As Chrissy begins to understand the grief her mother endured, both must confront their fears to heal their fractured relationship. The Great Believers meets The Fault in Our Stars, That Summer weaves together stories from two eras of the epidemic, 1996 and 2019, to share one family's experience of pediatric HIV.
